Why San Diego homeowners are adding batteries
Power costs the most in the evening
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) delivers power to homes across San Diego. Its standard plan for homes, TOU-DR1, charges the most from 4pm to 9pm every day, weekends included¹, right when families get home and rooftop solar is winding down.
Credits for extra solar are lower
California also changed the rules for new solar in 2023. Under the state's current billing plan, often called NEM 3.0 (SDG&E calls it the Solar Billing Plan), the credit for extra power you send to the grid is usually lower than what you pay for power². A battery lets you keep that midday power and use it during the evening peak instead of selling it cheaply.
Outages take rooftop solar offline too
Outages are the other reason. When strong winds and dry conditions raise the risk of wildfire, SDG&E may shut off power to a whole line, so a home can lose power even when it's calm in its own neighborhood³. Heat waves and equipment problems can cut power too, and rooftop solar shuts off in an outage unless there's a battery behind it.
Designed around your home
Every home is a little different. We design around your roof, any shade and which circuits you want backed up, and the battery usually goes on an exterior wall or in the garage. Already have Sunrun solar? Many customers can add a battery to the system they have.

San Diego solar and battery FAQs
It depends on your roof, your energy use and how much of your home you want backed up. With a Sunrun Subscription, you can get solar and a battery for $0 to little down and a predictable monthly payment while Sunrun owns and maintains the system. You can also buy it upfront or with a loan; your advisor will price both for free.
NEM 3.0 is the common name for California's Net Billing Tariff, which SDG&E calls the Solar Billing Plan. It covers homes that applied to connect solar on or after April 15, 2023. Power you send to the grid earns credits that are usually lower than what you pay for power, so storing it in a battery usually gets more value from your panels. Solar Billing Plan customers are on SDG&E's EV-TOU-5 plan, with peak pricing from 4pm to 9pm. If your home is on an older plan, you generally keep it for 20 years from when your system was first connected.
Sunrun's Customer Engagement team can help by phone or live chat, and the Sunrun app makes it easy to schedule inspections or maintenance. With a Sunrun Subscription, repairs are covered. You'll find the right number on our contact page.
A charged battery can run your backed-up circuits during a Public Safety Power Shutoff, just as it does in other grid outages. SDG&E uses these shutoffs only when strong winds and dry conditions create a significant wildfire risk, and if any part of the line serving your area passes through a high-risk location, the whole line may be turned off, even when it's calm where you live. How long the battery lasts depends on its charge and what you run; our battery duration guide shows how to stretch it.
If needed, a technician visits first to check your electrical panel and roof. Once you approve the design, we apply for permits from the City of San Diego (or your own city or the county, if you live outside city limits) and for SDG&E's approval to connect. Most installations take one to two days, and the system turns on after it passes inspection and SDG&E grants permission to operate.
Many Sunrun customers in California can add a battery to their existing system. It comes down to the equipment you have and the terms of your agreement. Check if your home qualifies.
