During times of peak demand, your battery will share energy to the grid, called a grid event. You will earn rewards over the summer depending on the amount of grid events. You'll also get Net Energy Metering (NEM) credit on your utility bill.

Sunrun CalReady Season

The summer season takes place between 5/1/26 and 10/31/26. Grid events can occur between 4-9pm and last anywhere from 1-3 hours. There will be no more than 60 event hours during the summer season.

FAQs

Yes. CalReady is a Sunrun Distributed Power Plant similar to a virtual power plant (VPP). Sunrun manages the coordination between your system and the grid. Sunrun customers who participate receive the benefits directly from Sunrun. CalReady is simply a perk of being a Sunrun customer.


CalReady is available to qualifying Sunrun solar & storage customers in California. Eligible customers will be contacted by Sunrun via email, notifying them that they qualify and are enrolled before the start of each Sunrun CalReady season.

Following the conclusion of the Sunrun CalReady summer season of  10/31/26 participants will receive more information regarding their final reward amount directly from Sunrun. Sunrun will notify Participants when the Sunrun Incentive is available in Spring 2027.

Sunrun batteries are equipped with smart features that prioritize your energy needs while maximizing earnings in Sunrun CalReady. Sunrun will seamlessly control and monitor your system. Throughout the season, Sunrun may signal your system to charge, discharge, or change its mode of operation. During a grid event, the stored PV power in your battery system will send energy to your home and then the grid (if extra is available), until reaching your backup reserve. Otherwise, your system will operate under default optimized settings.

During a power outage your battery system will not send any power to the grid. Storm Mode (an automatic Sunrun setting for any non-Tesla Powerwall systems) or Storm Watch (if enabled in the Tesla app for Powerwalls) will keep participants' homes prepared for critical storms and severe weather.

Participating systems maintain a minimum 20% backup reserve in case of power outages. Storm Mode and Storm Watch will add another layer of protection for critical storms and severe weather. (Shift™ batteries do not provide backup power during an outage).

Yes, you can opt out of Sunrun CalReady at any time by sending an email to grid@sunrun.com.

Please note, those that opt out after the program starts, will not be eligible to receive the reward.

Only Sunrun solar & storage customers located in California are eligible. Sunrun customers can only participate in Sunrun Distributed Power Plant programs, dual enrollment is not permitted. 

As energy demand continues to increase and outpaces the supply, Sunrun CalReady provides a fast and meaningful way to provide large scale capacity of energy to the California grid. Sunrun CalReady is a network of tens of thousands of Sunrun home battery systems across California, coordinated to offset grid strain and reduce power outages. When energy demand is high, SunRun CalReady distributes energy back to the grid, bypassing the need for peaker stations. In return, Sunrun passes on rewards to Sunrun CalReady participants as a way of sharing benefits across the system.
