Why Houston homeowners are adding batteries
CenterPoint Energy delivers power to most Houston homes, but you buy the electricity itself from a retail electricity provider you choose. Here’s what shapes a solar and battery plan in Houston.
Buyback depends on your plan
Texas has no statewide net metering rule. You can sell extra solar only to the provider you buy power from, that provider isn’t required to buy it, and providers that do set their own buyback terms³.
Stored solar goes further
A battery lets you keep the power your panels make at midday and use it in the evening, when the sun is low and the air conditioner is still running, instead of exporting it for whatever your plan pays.
Storms take rooftop solar offline too
Hurricane Beryl left more than 2.26 million CenterPoint customers without power in July 2024, and some homes waited more than a week to get it back¹. Two months earlier, the May 2024 derecho cut power to nearly 922,000 CenterPoint customers⁴. Rooftop solar shuts off when the grid goes down unless there’s a battery behind it.
HOA communities
Many Houston homes are in HOA communities. Texas law limits how far an HOA can restrict solar panels, though it can still review your plans (see the FAQ below).

Houston solar and battery FAQs
It depends on your roof, how much power your home uses and how much of it you want backed up. With a Sunrun Subscription, you can get solar and a battery for $0 to little down and a predictable monthly payment while Sunrun owns, monitors and maintains the system. You can also buy the system with cash or a loan. Your advisor will price both for free, using your past electricity bills.
It comes down to cash flow and who you want responsible for the equipment. With the Sunrun Subscription, Sunrun owns the system and covers monitoring, maintenance and repairs for the length of your agreement, and the plan can transfer to the next owner if you sell your home. If you buy, you own the equipment and care for it yourself after the warranties. The federal tax credit for homeowner-owned solar isn’t available for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025, so check with a tax advisor before you buy. Compare plans.
Texas has no statewide net metering rule for homes in Houston’s competitive market. You can sell extra solar only to the retail electricity provider you buy from, and providers aren’t required to buy it, so credits depend on the plan you pick. CenterPoint still owns the lines and meter and approves your connection. A battery lets you keep more of your solar for your own evening use. With a qualifying Reliant plan, Sunrun can also enroll your battery in the Texas GridReady program, which earns Sunrun bill credits for sharing stored energy with the grid when demand is high. See how it works.
When the grid goes down, your battery switches on by itself and powers the circuits you chose to back up. How long it lasts depends on how charged it is and what you run: a refrigerator, lights and Wi-Fi use far less than central air or an EV charger. With Storm Watch turned on, your battery works to get as close to a full charge as it can before a severe storm arrives, and your panels recharge it when the sun comes back out. Our battery duration guide shows how to stretch it.
Usually not. Under Texas Property Code section 202.010, most HOAs can’t ban solar panels. An HOA can still require its approval before you install and set some limits, such as keeping panels below the roofline, following the roof’s slope and using black, bronze or silver frames. It can ask for a specific spot on the roof unless another spot would produce more than 10% more energy. In small communities still under development, the builder may be able to restrict solar until building wraps up.
Add-on batteries are available to Sunrun solar customers in CenterPoint territory. Whether your home qualifies depends on the equipment you have and the terms of your agreement. Check if your home qualifies.
