Why Billerica homeowners are adding batteries
Power prices in Massachusetts
National Grid delivers electricity to homes in Billerica.³ Massachusetts power costs well above the national average, so every kWh your panels make and your home uses is one you don't buy from the grid at that price.¹
Net metering still applies
Massachusetts still offers net metering. When your panels make more than your home is using, the extra goes to the grid and National Grid credits your bill. For home systems of 25 kW or less, unused credits carry forward from one bill to the next, so long summer days help cover short winter ones.⁴
What a battery adds
A battery adds two things. First, backup: rooftop solar shuts off in an outage for safety unless a battery is behind it, and in New England, most power outages happen in winter.⁵ Second, rewards: with Sunrun ConnectedSolutions, eligible batteries share some stored power on peak-demand days and earn a yearly reward.²
Designed for New England winters
Winter shapes the design, too. Panels make less power on short days and under snow, so we size your system from a full year of your National Grid bills, not a single month.

Billerica solar and battery FAQs
It depends on your roof, your energy use and how much of your home you want backed up. With a Sunrun Subscription, you can get solar and a battery for $0 to little down and a predictable monthly payment while Sunrun owns and maintains the system. You can also buy it upfront or with a loan; your advisor will price both for free.
When your panels make more power than your home is using, the extra flows to the grid and National Grid credits your bill. For home systems of 25 kW or less, the credit is based on most of the per-kWh supply and delivery charges on your bill; fixed monthly charges are not credited. Unused credits carry forward from one bill to the next. A battery lets you keep more of your own solar for evenings and outages.
SMART (Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target) is the state's solar incentive program, now in its third version. For small home systems, it pays the system owner a fixed amount per kWh for 20 years. At this time, Sunrun does not participate in the SMART program. Net metering is a separate program, run through National Grid.
If you're eligible, yes. Sunrun runs ConnectedSolutions for its solar and battery customers on National Grid, Eversource and Cape Light Compact. On peak-demand days, enrolled batteries share some stored power with the grid, and participants earn $250 to $400 per battery each year, depending on the battery. Participating batteries keep at least 20% of their charge for your home, and you can opt out at any time. See ConnectedSolutions for the full terms.
Yes, but they make less power on short, cloudy days and while snow covers them, and more in the long days of spring and summer. We design your system around a full year of National Grid bills, and net metering credits from sunny months carry forward to help cover darker ones. In New England, most power outages happen in winter, which is when battery backup matters most. Our battery duration guide shows how long a charge can last.
If you buy your system, Massachusetts offers a state income tax credit of 15% of the net cost, up to $1,000, and solar equipment for your main home is exempt from state sales tax. Also, the added value of a qualifying solar system, owned or leased, is exempt from local property tax for 20 years. Federal tax credit rules for homeowner-owned solar changed at the end of 2025; ask a tax advisor what you qualify for. With a Sunrun Subscription, Sunrun owns the system, so the state income tax credit for buyers doesn't apply to you; your monthly price is what you pay.
