Why Honolulu homeowners are adding batteries
Power prices on Oahu
Hawaiian Electric supplies power on Oahu. In October 2026, its standard residential rate on Oahu starts at 45.81 cents per kWh for the first 350 kWh, and a 500 kWh month costs about $246.³
How rooftop solar connects now
Hawaiian Electric closed net metering to new customers in 2015, and the programs that followed it are closed too. New rooftop systems now connect under Hawaiian Electric's Smart Renewable Energy programs: Export, which credits the power you send to the grid at rates that change by time of day, and Non-Export, which keeps all of your solar at home.⁴ Under Export, Oahu export credits are highest from 5pm to 9pm (32.9 cents per kWh) and lowest from 9am to 5pm (13.5 cents per kWh).⁴ A battery lets you store midday sun and use it, or share it, after 5pm instead of sending it out at the lowest rate.
Outages take rooftop solar offline too
Outages are the other reason. In 2025, the average Oahu customer was without power for about 4.3 hours over the year, counting storm days, and the first three months of 2026 were worse.² Rooftop solar shuts off in an outage unless a battery is behind it, and Hawaiian Electric may turn off power to parts of the Waianae Coast when wildfire risk is high.⁵
Battery programs on Oahu
Hawaiian Electric also runs Bring Your Own Device Plus (BYOD Plus), which pays an upfront incentive and monthly bill credits for batteries that send power to the grid during a two-hour window each day.⁶ Battery Bonus, the earlier program, is closed. Your advisor can walk you through which programs fit your home and your plan.

Honolulu solar and battery FAQs
It depends on your roof, your energy use and how much of your home you want backed up. With a Sunrun Subscription, you can get solar and a battery for $0 to little down and a predictable monthly payment while Sunrun owns and maintains the system. You can also buy it upfront or with a loan; your advisor will price both for free.
Not as a new customer. Hawaiian Electric closed net metering to new applicants in 2015, and the programs that followed (Customer Grid-Supply, Customer Self-Supply, Customer Grid-Supply Plus and Smart Export) are closed to new applicants too. New systems connect under Smart Renewable Energy Export, which credits exported power by time of day, or Smart Renewable Energy Non-Export, which keeps all of your power at home. Homes already on net metering can generally stay on it.
Not always, but it usually gets more from your panels here. Under Smart Renewable Energy Export, Oahu credits for power exported between 9am and 5pm are 13.5 cents per kWh, while the standard residential rate starts at 45.81 cents per kWh, so solar you store and use yourself is generally worth more than solar you send out at midday. A battery also keeps your essentials running in an outage.
It depends on what you run after the sun goes down and what you want backed up. Air conditioning, an electric water heater and an EV charger draw far more than lights, a refrigerator and Wi-Fi. We size the system from your Hawaiian Electric bill history and talk through which circuits matter most. Our battery duration guide shows how to stretch a charge.
It may. Hawaiian Electric's Bring Your Own Device Plus program pays an upfront incentive based on the battery capacity you commit, plus monthly bill credits for batteries that send power to the grid during a two-hour window you pick each day. Battery Bonus, the earlier program, is closed. When a battery is leased, Hawaiian Electric pays the upfront incentive to the leasing company, so ask your advisor how the program works with the plan you choose.
If you buy your system, you may be able to claim Hawaii's Renewable Energy Technologies Income Tax Credit, generally 35% of the cost, up to $5,000 per system, but a 2026 state law adds income limits and a yearly statewide cap starting with 2027 tax years. Federal tax credit rules for homeowner-owned solar changed at the end of 2025. Ask a tax advisor what you qualify for. With a Sunrun Subscription, Sunrun owns the system, so the state credit is not yours to claim; your monthly price is what you pay.
