Why San Francisco homeowners are adding batteries
PG&E delivers power to most homes in the city, and many households buy the electricity itself through CleanPowerSF, the city's community choice program. Here's what shapes a solar and battery plan in the city.
Power costs the most in the evening
PG&E's time-of-use rates charge the most in the late afternoon and evening, right when families get home and rooftop solar is winding down.
Credits for extra solar are lower
California changed the rules for new solar in 2023. Under the state's current billing plan, often called NEM 3.0, the credit for extra power you send to the grid is much lower than it used to be. A battery lets you keep that midday power and use it after sunset instead of selling it cheaply.
Outages take rooftop solar offline too
Storms and equipment failures can leave a block without power for hours, and rooftop solar goes dark too unless there's a battery behind it.
Designed for San Francisco homes
No two San Francisco homes are quite alike. Attached row houses, flat roofs and summer fog in the western neighborhoods all shape a design. So does finding room for the battery, which usually goes on an exterior wall or in the garage.

San Francisco solar and battery FAQs
It depends on your roof, your energy use and how much of your home you want backed up. With a Sunrun Subscription, you can get solar and a battery for $0 to little down and a predictable monthly payment while Sunrun owns and maintains the system. You can also buy it upfront or with a loan; your advisor will price both for free.
It depends on how charged the battery is when the power goes out and what you run. A refrigerator, lights and Wi-Fi draw far less than an electric water heater or an EV charger, and your panels recharge the battery when the sun comes out, which can keep essentials running through outages that last more than a day. Our battery duration guide shows how to stretch it.
NEM 3.0 is the common name for California's Net Billing Tariff. It covers new PG&E solar customers who applied on or after April 15, 2023, and it credits the power you export at much lower rates than earlier plans, so storing it in a battery usually gets more value from your panels. If your home is already on an older plan, you generally keep it for 20 years from when the system was first connected.
If needed, a technician visits first to check your electrical panel and roof structure. Once you approve the design, we apply for city permits and PG&E's approval to connect. Most installations take one to two days, and the system turns on after the city inspects it and PG&E grants permission to operate.
Incentives change often, so we check what applies to your address during design. Federal tax credit rules for homeowner-owned solar changed at the end of 2025; if you plan to buy, ask a tax advisor what you qualify for. With a Sunrun Subscription, Sunrun owns the system, and any benefits from rebates and tax credits come to you as a lower monthly cost.
Many Sunrun customers in California can add a battery to their existing system. It comes down to the equipment you have and the terms of your agreement. Check if your home qualifies.
