Why Concord homeowners are adding batteries
PG&E delivers electricity to homes in Concord, and most Concord homes buy the electricity itself from MCE, the community choice program the city joined in 2018. You still get one bill from PG&E. Here's what shapes a solar and battery plan in Concord.
Power costs the most in the evening
PG&E's time-of-use plans, including the Electric Home plan new solar customers are placed on, charge the most from 4 to 9pm every day. That's when families get home, the house is still warm on summer evenings and rooftop solar is winding down.
Credits for extra solar are lower
California changed the rules for new solar in 2023. Under the state's current billing plan, often called NEM 3.0, the credit for extra power you send to the grid is much lower than it used to be, and that holds on MCE's version of the plan too. A battery lets you keep your midday power and use it after sunset instead of selling it cheaply.
Outages take rooftop solar offline too
PG&E has turned off power to some parts of Contra Costa County during high wildfire risk, which it calls a Public Safety Power Shutoff, and storms and equipment failures cause outages too. Rooftop solar goes dark during an outage unless there's a battery behind it.
Designed around your bills
Every design starts with your utility bills: how much power you use after 4pm, what you want backed up, and where the battery fits, which is usually an exterior wall or the garage.

Concord solar and battery FAQs
Most Concord homes buy their electricity from MCE, the community choice program, while PG&E delivers it and sends the bill. When you go solar, PG&E still approves the connection and handles delivery, and MCE credits the generation part of your bill. New solar customers are on MCE's version of the Solar Billing Plan, which settles charges and credits every month, and MCE adds some credits of its own for solar and battery customers. Your advisor will walk through how it works on your bill.
It depends on your roof, your energy use and how much of your home you want backed up. With a Sunrun Subscription, you can get solar and a battery for $0 to little down and a predictable monthly payment while Sunrun owns and maintains the system. You can also buy the system outright; your advisor will price both for free.
Incentives change often, so we check what applies to your address during design. Federal tax credit rules for homeowner-owned solar changed at the end of 2025; if you plan to buy, ask a tax advisor what you qualify for. With a Sunrun Subscription, Sunrun owns the system, and any benefits from rebates and tax credits come to you as a lower monthly cost.
NEM 3.0 is the common name for California's Net Billing Tariff, which PG&E and MCE call the Solar Billing Plan. It covers new solar customers who applied on or after April 15, 2023, and places them on PG&E's Electric Home rate plan. It credits the power you export at much lower rates than earlier plans, so storing it in a battery usually gets more value from your panels. If your home is already on an older plan, it generally keeps that plan for 20 years from when the system was first connected, even if the home is sold.
If needed, a technician visits first to check your electrical panel and roof structure. Once you approve the design, we apply for permits and PG&E's approval to connect. Most installations take one to two days, and the system turns on after the inspection and PG&E grants permission to operate.
It depends on how charged the battery is when the power goes out and what you run. A refrigerator, lights and Wi-Fi draw far less than an electric water heater or an EV charger, and your panels recharge the battery when the sun comes out, which can keep essentials running through outages that last more than a day. Our battery duration guide shows how to stretch it.
