Why Bakersfield homeowners are adding batteries
PG&E delivers electricity to homes in Bakersfield, and summers here are long and hot. Here's what shapes a solar and battery plan in Bakersfield.
Power costs the most in the evening
On PG&E's time-of-use plans, including the Electric Home plan new solar customers are placed on, power costs the most from 4 to 9pm every day. In a Bakersfield summer, that's when the house is still hot, the AC is working hardest and rooftop solar is winding down.
Credits for extra solar are lower
California changed the rules for new solar in 2023. Under the state's current billing plan, often called NEM 3.0, the credit for extra power you send to the grid is much lower than it used to be. A battery lets you keep that midday power and run your home on it in the evening instead of selling it cheaply.
Outages take rooftop solar offline too
Rooftop solar goes dark during an outage unless there's a battery behind it. PG&E has also turned off power to some Kern County circuits during high wildfire risk, mostly in the mountains south and east of Bakersfield. PG&E calls this a Public Safety Power Shutoff.
Designed around your PG&E bills
Every design starts with your bills: how much power you use after 4pm, what you want backed up, and where the battery fits, which is usually an exterior wall or the garage.

Bakersfield solar and battery FAQs
It depends on your bills, your roof and when you use power. PG&E's time-of-use plans charge the most from 4 to 9pm, right when Bakersfield homes are cooling down after a hot day and solar panels are winding down. A battery lets you store midday solar for those hours instead of sending it to the grid for a smaller credit. Your Sunrun advisor compares your PG&E bills with and without solar before you decide, at no cost.
It depends on your roof, your energy use and how much of your home you want backed up. With a Sunrun Subscription, you can get solar and a battery for $0 to little down and a predictable monthly payment while Sunrun owns and maintains the system. You can also buy the system outright; your advisor will price both for free.
It comes down to whether you want to own and care for the system yourself. With a Sunrun Subscription, Sunrun owns, monitors and maintains the system and you pay a monthly rate. Sunrun Flex adds extra solar capacity and integrated battery storage, and you pay for what you use. If you buy, you own the system outright and look after it yourself, backed by manufacturer's equipment warranties and a 10 year workmanship guarantee. Compare Sunrun plans.
Incentives change often, so we check what applies to your address during design. Federal tax credit rules for homeowner-owned solar changed at the end of 2025; if you plan to buy, ask a tax advisor what you qualify for. With a Sunrun Subscription, Sunrun owns the system, and any benefits from rebates and tax credits come to you as a lower monthly cost.
NEM 3.0 is the common name for California's Net Billing Tariff, which PG&E calls its Solar Billing Plan. It covers new PG&E solar customers who applied on or after April 15, 2023, and places them on PG&E's Electric Home rate plan. It credits the power you export at much lower rates than earlier plans, so storing it in a battery usually gets more value from your panels. If your home is already on an older plan, it generally keeps that plan for 20 years from when the system was first connected, even if the home is sold.
It depends on how the system is set up. Which circuits your battery supports is decided during installation, based on your home's size and energy needs. With partial backup, the battery covers the circuits you choose, which can be most of a home except a few heavy loads such as a pool pump, an EV charger or a second AC unit. To run high-demand appliances in an outage, you may need more than one battery. Our battery duration guide shows how to make the charge last.
