California solar + battery
Home Solar and Battery Storage in California
What's changing for California homeowners
California homes paid about 34 cents per kWh as of July 2026,¹ and what you pay also depends on the time of day. PG&E, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric all use time-of-use rates that charge more in the late afternoon and evening.
The rules changed as well. For new solar customers under California's Net Billing Tariff, better known as NEM 3.0, the credits for extra power sent back to the grid have dropped by about 70%.²
Outages are the other half of the story. Heat waves strain the grid, winter storms bring down lines, and in high fire-risk areas utilities may shut off power ahead of dangerous winds through Public Safety Power Shutoffs.

How does California compare?
Why a battery matters more in California now
Use your solar at peak times
Ride through outages
Keep more of what you make
In time-based mode, your battery covers the most expensive hours with stored solar and keeps a 20% reserve for outages.
Your battery switches on by itself when the power goes out and recharges from your panels once the sun is up.
Instead of exporting your midday surplus for a small credit, a battery holds it for your own home.

California solar and battery FAQs
It's California's Net Billing Tariff, the solar billing plan for new customers of PG&E, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric who applied on or after April 15, 2023. You still earn credit for power you send to the grid, just much less than under NEM 1.0 or 2.0.
It's a deliberate shutoff: when strong winds and dry conditions raise wildfire risk, utilities can cut power to high fire-risk areas. With a battery, your backed-up circuits stay on. Some batteries, including Tesla Powerwall with Storm Watch turned on, also charge up when severe weather is forecast, so you start the shutoff with more stored energy.
It isn't required. Under NEM 3.0, though, a battery helps you get more value from your panels, and it's the only way your solar keeps working in an outage: without one, panels shut off when the grid goes down to protect utility crews.
You can subscribe or buy. A Sunrun Subscription means Sunrun owns, monitors and maintains the system, and you pay a predictable monthly rate with $0 to little down. If you'd rather own it, you can pay upfront or use a solar loan. Compare plans.
Often, yes. Homes on NEM 1.0 or 2.0 generally keep that plan for 20 years from when the system was first connected, and a battery can still add backup power and help with time-of-use rates. Existing Sunrun customers can check add-on battery eligibility, and we'll explain how a battery fits your current plan before you commit.
Some, though they change often. Federal tax credit rules for homeowner-owned systems changed at the end of 2025, and state and utility programs depend on funding and eligibility. Your advisor will check what your address qualifies for.
