Pokémon is a media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, and it is managed by The Pokémon Company, which is a collaboration between Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures. The franchise was created in 1996 and centered initially on video games for the Game Boy, starting with "Pokémon Red and Green." These games involve players, known as Pokémon Trainers, catching and training various fictional creatures called "Pokémon" and using them to battle each other.
The franchise has since expanded into a variety of other media, including a very popular trading card game, an animated television series, movies, comic books, and toys. Pokémon has become a global phenomenon and one of the most successful and enduring video game franchises, alongside Nintendo's Mario franchise.
Each Pokémon has its own unique properties, including types (such as water, fire, grass, etc.), abilities, and stats. Players often have to strategize around these attributes to build effective teams and succeed in battles against other trainers. The motto of Pokémon, "Gotta Catch 'Em All," reflects the game's collecting aspect, which is central to the game's appeal.
